Postdoctoral Researcher/Project Researcher (Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometry)
The University of Eastern Finland, UEF, is one of the largest multidisciplinary universities in Finland. We offer education in nearly one hundred major subjects, and are home to approximately 15,000 students and 2,800 members of staff. We operate on three campuses in Joensuu, Kuopio and Savonlinna. In international rankings, we are ranked among the leading 300 universities in the world.
The Faculty of Science and Forestry operates on the Kuopio and Joensuu campuses of the University of Eastern Finland. The mission of the faculty is to carry out internationally recognised scientific research and to offer research-education in the fields of natural sciences and forest sciences. The faculty invests in all of the strategic research areas of the university. The faculty’s environments for research and learning are international, modern and multidisciplinary. The faculty has approximately 3,800 Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students and some 490 postgraduate students. The number of staff amounts to 560. http://www.uef.fi/en/lumet/etusivu
We are now inviting applications for
a Postdoctoral Researcher/Project Researcher (Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometry), Department of Applied Physics, Kuopio Campus
We are currently looking for a highly motivated postdoc who would like to work on a project that uses a chemical ionization mass spectrometer including a filter inlet for gases and aerosols (FIGAERO-CIMS). The project will investigate the lifecycle of atmospheric organic carbon, with a main focus on the product compounds of the oxidation of biogenic organic compounds, their loss mechanisms in the environment, and their transformations in aerosol particles. The FIGAERO-CIMS, plus ancillary instruments, will be deployed for ambient measurements (e.g. in different forests), as well as in laboratory studies.
The project is embedded in the Aerosol Physics Group at the University of Eastern Finland in Kuopio, Finland ( http://www.uef.fi/en/sovfys/aerosolphysics ). Funding for the research is associated with the Academy of Finland Postdoctoral Researcher funding scheme (topic title: Oxidised organic vapours in the atmosphere: From fluxes to chemical formation mechanisms and impacts).
To be appointed as a postdoctoral researcher, applicants must hold a suitable doctoral degree. If the applicant has been awarded his or her doctoral degree less than five years ago, the post will be one of a Postdoctoral Researcher. If the doctoral degree has been awarded more than five years ago, the post will be one of a Project Researcher.
The position will be filled for a two-year term from November 1, 2017 (or as agreed). The continuation of the position will be agreed separately.
The position will be filled for a fixed term due to it pertaining to a specific project (Postdoctoral researcher positions shall always be filled for a fixed term, UEF University Regulations 31 ).
The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities and is based on level 5 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff (€2,865.30/ month). In addition to the job requirement component, the salary includes a personal performance component, which may be a maximum of 46.3% of the job requirement component.
If you are interested in joining our young and dynamic research group, and if you have a background in atmospheric/environmental sciences, mass spectrometry, aerosol research or organic chemistry, send your application to us by 30 September 2017. Researchers finishing their PhD in the near future are also encouraged to apply. However, they are expected to hold a PhD degree by the starting date of the position.
For further information on the position, please contact: Assistant Professor Siegfried Schobesberger, email: siegfried.schobesberger(at)uef.fi , tel. +358 50 339 0647.
