Doctoral candidate (PhD student) in “Learning-Assisted Optimization for Resource Management in 5G Networks”

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) invites applications from PhD candidates in the general area of signal processing for wireless communications. SnT is carrying out interdisciplinary research in secure, reliable and trustworthy ICT systems and services, often in collaboration with industrial, governmental or international partners.

Your Role
The successful candidate will be supported by the Luxembourg-Singapore Bilateral project “LARGOS (Learning-Assisted Optimization for Resource and Security Management in Slicing-Based 5G Networks). The candidate will carry out his/her research work at SnT for 3 years and 1 year at the Singapore Institution, Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). Our close industry and academia partnership will offer first-hand industrial expertise, scientific guidance, as well as unique training opportunity for the PhD candidates.

The candidate will join an internationally leading and motivated research team, under the supervision by: Prof. Björn Ottersten (IEEE Fellow, SnT, Luxembourg), Dr. Symeon Chatzinotas (IEEE Senior Member, SnT, Luxembourg), and Dr. Sumei Sun (IEEE Fellow, I2R, A*STAR, Singapore) in order to carry out research to pursue a PhD on the following topics:

  • SDN/NFV and 5G network slicing;
  • Optimization and machine learning applied in 5G wireless networks;
  • Mathematical modeling and intelligent algorithm development for improving 5G network performance;
  • Resource management in 5G slicing based networks;

The position holder will be required to perform the following tasks:

  • Carrying out research in the predefined areas
  • Disseminating results through scientific publications
  • Participating in drafting project deliverables
  • Presenting the results in the well-known international conferences and workshops

Your Profile
The candidate should possess an MSc degree or equivalent in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or Applied Mathematics.

Experience: The ideal candidate should have some knowledge and experience in a number of the following topics:

  • 5G SDN/NFV
  • Signal processing for wireless communications
  • Cross-layer design and radio resource optimization in 4G/5G/satellite/IoT networks
  • Applications of machine/deep learning in wireless communications

and be familiar with the principles of

  • Optimization theory (convex/non-convex, combinatorial, linear/non-linear optimization)
  • Machine/deep learning
  • Statistical signal processing

Programming skills: familiar with optimization/deep learning tools, and strong in one of the programming languages MATLAB, Python, or C++.

  • Language Skills: Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English are mandatory
