PhD position in Atmospheric Sciences

The Atmospheric Science group at the Department of Environmental Sciences, is looking for a PhD student candidate. Our research focuses on chemical processes in the atmosphere to elucidate the formation and toxicity of atmospheric aerosol particles. The development of new analytical-chemical methods and instruments to characterize organic aerosols is a main focus of our work. Atmospheric aerosol particles are the most important health-relevant air pollution components. Clear correlations between exposure to increased levels of aerosols and severe health effects have been observed. However, particle components and properties causing these health effects are not well understood but oxidising particle components are likely to play an important role, inducing oxidative stress in the lung and ultimately inflammation and disease.

Your position

A PhD studentship is available to characterize in detail the chemical composition of aerosols. Your PhD project will combine atmospheric chemistry, organic synthesis, chemical analysis, statistical techniques, and interdisciplinary collaboration to investigate the composition and toxicity of atmospheric particulate matter, with a focus on oxidising molecules, including organic peroxides. You will gain hands-on experience with gas and liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry and DAD/fluorescence detection, in-depth data analysis skills to fully explore and visualize results, and work both autonomously and directly with other group members and external collaborators.

Your profile

Applicants must possess an academic qualification (good undergraduate or masters degree) in chemistry or a related field, and should ideally have experience with organic synthetic chemistry and analytical techniques (LC/GC, mass spectrometry), basic ability in programming and statistical analysis. Understanding of atmospheric processes and/or toxicology would be an advantage. A good level of English, excellent communication skills and a willingness to collaborate are essential. You will also need strong motivation, perseverance, initiative and creative problem-solving to tackle some of the most pressing questions in our field.

We offer you

The project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation for four years. The project complements our ongoing work in characterising toxic components in aerosols, and you will join a multicultural team with broad interdisciplinary experience and interests.

Application / Contact

Please submit your complete application documents, including a one page letter stating your motivation, experience and skills, a CV and contact details of at least two academic references via our online recruiting platform. We accept only online applications.
Prof. Markus Kalberer will review the applications from 21st September 2020, but the advert will remain open until the position is filled. Starting date is January 2021 (or later subject to agreement).
